Intelligent data analysis from Bioinformatics data
The activities developed within the research area are carried out with the use of artificial intelligence techniques and machine learning for the interpretation of data on biological systems. The inherent complexity of such systems and the lack of a theory that explains the mechanisms of organization at the molecular level render the algorithms conventionally used for the interpretation of data less appropriate. The approach based on machine learning is appropriate for the analysis of domains characterized by a considerable amount of data, for patterns affected by noise and in situations where the complexity of the systems do not easily allow the definition of theoretical models. Furthermore, for the modelling and simulation of the domain of interest and the behaviour of biological systems, artificial intelligence techniques are used (ontologies, expert systems, multi-agent systems).
